Market and touchpoint observation
Interviews tell you what people recall. Observation shows how language forms in demos, onboarding, support, and peer forums—including endless QuickBooks comparisons.
Build a touchpoint inventory
List every place a prospect encounters claims: search results, comparison pages, live demos, trial emails, accountant referrals, Reddit threads, partner webinars. For accounting software, QuickBooks appears in almost every inventory as default, rival, or migration origin. Note which channel owns which message.
Observation is not espionage. Sit in public webinars, request demos with disclosed research intent where required, review publicly available help docs, and code support transcripts your company already owns. tuxklum’s ethic: do not misrepresent yourself as a buyer if your role is researcher.
Code moments, not vibes
Use a simple codebook: confusion, trust, comparison, price shock, migration fear, status quo comfort. Timestamp notes. When a prospect says “we already live in QuickBooks,” mark status quo comfort. When a demo ignores export questions, mark friction. These codes later roll into buying friction patterns.
Compare vendor language with buyer language. If a site promises “switch from QuickBooks in a weekend” but forum posts describe three-week chart-of-accounts cleanup, you have a positioning risk—not a survey result.
Observation checklist
Demo
Which questions get deferred? How is QuickBooks mentioned—enemy, peer, or stepping stone?
Onboarding
Do emails assume prior bookkeeping literacy? Where do users abandon?
Peer talk
What metaphors and warnings repeat among accountants and operators?
Pair observation with decision-maker conversations so public language and private risk talk stay connected. Then synthesize carefully in positioning synthesis.
What observation is not
It is not a substitute for interviews. It is not “market share research.” It will not give you representative statistics about how many businesses use QuickBooks. tuxklum uses observation to sharpen hypotheses and quote-worthy language, then validates through conversation and qualitative insight practice.
